Her birthday is Feb. 2, 2006 which by my watch makes her a kitten still. Her last owners noted that she is good with cats, dogs and children of all ages. She was surrendered because the son in her family is still a little too young to play nice with kitties. Eager to go where ever it is you lead, this guy is destined to be the ultimate companion. Soft coated, pink nosed and light footed, Rosie is a darling little kitty. Yet another I wish I could bring home. Originally Rosie was brought to KHS because of owner's allergies. Shortly there-after she was adopted and returned because she had a cold. She is all healed and ready to go. She is declawed on both front feet so that means indoor kitty only!

Her birthday is September 14, 2005 so she is just over one year old- and my how well she behaves herself for a kitten! She enjoys balls, squeaky toys, fake mice, string and paper bags. She can often be found sunning herself in the window or cuddling in the nearest lap. Two enthusiastic paws up for miss Rosie!!

Meet Mystik.

Meet Mystik. {UPDATE: Mystik found a home!!}

Mystik with a "k" is one cool cat! His birthday is 12-24-05 (which makes him a Sagittarius for all of you keeping track...) and true to his working dog heritage he is a spunky and intelligent 8 month old rascal! :) He has a very soft mouth and takes treats very VERY gently.

Hershey was released to the Humane Society because of a divorce. After a couple-week break from the pet of the week program to accommodate the holiday and scheduling conflicts, we are back with a bang, or should I say, a Dane.

Angel was a very pleasant surprise for me this morning. Not that I don't immediately adore every furry thing I meet, but Danes are just different. Angel, by the way, is an exemplary Dane at that. Jeff reported that she doesn't even pull on the leash! Who knew that was possible!?

Angel is 5yrs old and was released to the Humane Society because her owner developed health problems. She is very well trained and very sweet. Angel knows "sit", "stay" and "shake" and she is a talker!! I didn't give her the treat in a proper window of time and she told me so! (a short desperate whine just like my Olivia does!) haha

In the grand tradition that is "Great Dane" Angel is a couch potato- although we had to coax her onto it, I think in her previous home she was not allowed on the furniture. She is microchipped and up to date on her shots. She is crate trained and has been free fed, and she loves "car rides, squeaky toys, stuffed toys, and outdoor activity. Angel is also a barker (most Danes are) and although she is available for adoption, Angel can't quite leave the shelter's care yet because of a hernia that is not quite done healing.
Angel is looking for someone to take her in for the last half of her life- Preferably a home where she's the one and only-- I mean really, how can you resist a face like this???

Meet Chucky.

Meet Chucky. {UPDATE: Chucky was adopted July 13}

Well, lets start with the name. Chucky was previously known as "Ducky"- However, he was adopted after only a week at KHS, and went to live with a nice family who just happened to have... Ducks! Well, "Ducky" thought the ducks were ducky indeed, and his prey drive kicked in and sure enough- the ducks ceased to exist. Ducky, upon his return to the Humane Society for his hunting instincts, was aptly renamed "Chucky".

Chucky is a great cat. Between his incredible brassy-carmel colored eyes, his bobbed tail and his excellent purrrrr he won both Jeff and I over.

Chucky was a stray, so we don't know much about him. He is very handsome and loving. He is a sucker for ear and chin rubs. He has a beautiful, thick orange coat that is currently shedding for summer. He is very gentle with his paws, and when I picked him up, he wrapped his feet around my arm, but without claws.

Chucky just purred and purred as we continued to photograph those incredible eyes... Chucky is another one of those kids I wish I could bring home with me, but I just don't think Olivia would approve :) He would make a great "barn kitty"- just as long as he gets his daily dose of lovin!

Meet Tucker.

Meet Tucker.{UPDATE: Tucker was chosen to participate in Purdy Prison Partnership. He is certainly a people lover, and is very friendly to children, strangers and every dog he meets. Seems like he would the the PERFECT dog for someone who didn't want to just leave him at home all day. Although it was clear that she REALLY wanted to take a run in the big beautiful grassy field outside (who wouldn't!?) Bean was a wonderful subject! Eager to be near me and scarf cookies.

Her paperwork says she is a Husky mix, but we are pretty sure she is part Suluki. She sure photographs like she has a bit of yellow lab in there some where too! What we do know is that she can sit, stay, lay down and "crawl". It seems that Bean was brought to the Humane Society for nipping when people got too near to her food... I saw no signs of aggression when I was working with her and treats. Perhaps it depends on the setting. Bean is now an enrollee in K9 College and she has all the makings of a wonderful pet but it is recommended that she not go to a family with children under 6 years old.

Furry 5K: Sunday, June 11th at Seward park!

Come check out the Furry 5K, a benefit for Seattle Animal Shelter. But she was recently diagnosed with Demodectic Mange. Demodectic mange is caused by a microscopic mite that is present in most puppies. Mites are transferred from mother to pup. For most dogs, this condition is gone after their immune system strengthens (between 6-18 months). Because of her skin condition, Thora has some hair loss around her eyes, but all in all the naked eye would never know that she had any abnormality.

Thora responds well to commands like "sit" and "off" and is eager to play. She has a tiny frame that will likely become a perfect mid-size dog. She is thought to be a lab-pit bull mix. Her big brown puppy eyes are deep, alert and begging. I hope dearly for this little one that we can find someone out there who can care for her skin disease until she grows out of it and show her the warmth and love of family.

Meet Lynn.

Lynn is an amazing girl. Shortly after her time at the studio, Isis became very aggressive with KHS staff, and combined with her failing health, it was concluded that she wasn't fit for adoption. I mourned this beautiful lady... But she will always be remembered here.}

When this little white bundle arrived silently at the studio, she didn't have a name. A stray from the Bremerton area, this shy Siamese kitty won me over the second I glanced through the door of the kennel to see her piercing blue eyes. In honor of those ice-colored eyes, combined with her Siamese heritage and her sandy fur, I chose the name "Isis"~ I can just see her beautiful face painted in a hieroglyphic on some ancient tomb.

Little Isis is very shy. She was so eager to stay in her kennel that I ended up building her a little shelter to hide in while I photographed her. While watching her watch me, I realized that it is very possible that Isis doesn't see well. Her eyes scan quickly back and forth in the direction of sound or smell~ It could be that those beautiful baby blues of hers have been reduced to more decoration then function. This handicap would explain her extreme shyness.

More then any other feline I have met thus far through Operation Portrait PAWsitive, I wanted to take Isis home. She has some hair loss on her back end and although she has beautiful markings, her fur is course from malnutrition. I realized fairly quickly that it was more important to give Isis some love, then to get her portrait, so I spent a great deal of time petting and speaking to her... This TLC paid off and she actually purred.

Isis is thought to be about 2 years old. It is clear that she has had a hard life and is in great need of someone to nurse her back to health. She very much enjoys being scratched behind the ears and on her neck and she also likes to be held. I know there is someone out there looking to be the one Isis learns to trust and love... She is certainly a beautiful creature, more than worthy of a chance.

Meet Midnight.

Meet Midnight. {UPDATE: Midnight was joyfully adopted on Saturday, April 29th}

Midnight is a darling new mother. She is a very curious girl who loves to sit in the window and beside the door... watching the world go by.

Midnight is thought to be about a year and a half and she was released to the Humane Society because her family was moving from their home in Bremerton. She is an active and very affectionate girl who is a sucker for catnip and does well with other cats and children. She seems very thin and a bit tired (she's been feeding several little kittens... she's been a very busy lady!) She could really use a family to pamper and love her and her very own windowsill!

Meet Roxanne

Meet Roxanne {UPDATE: After one almost-adoption, Roxanne was taken home today, 4/24 by a wonderful family who is very excited to have her!}

Roxanne is an all around lady. He was sweet and affectionate and willing. However he is definitely still a puppy (he was a stray so it's impossible to know for sure, but his age is estimated between 8 and 12 months) When it came time to get his attention, treats were no match for Jeff's lap! Jake seemed to want more than anything, to snuggle, cuddle and be close to someone.

Although it's clear that Jake is part Dalmation, I am fairly positive he is also part greyhound. These beautiful kids were displaced by a new baby in the house, and just babies themselves, they need to find a home together.

Roxy popped right out into the new studio, eager to sniff. Obei held back for a few moments to let his sister give the all clear. Both of these sweet kittens are just precious. They are both crazy for catnip (I discovered) and are both very affectionate and gentle critters.

Obei is an orange tabby and he is thought to be about 9 months old. Not as shy as the other kitties I've hosted, he was eager to meet me, and didn't run and hide. Spaz is a very affectionate talkative guy and was very content wandering back and forth under the spotlight between Jeff and I to get pet.

Spaz is a 1-2 yr old who was displaced by a disapproving landlord. I am told that Spaz is a lap kitty who loves to nap on your bed or couch, but is also fairly independent and is ok with you leaving for a few days. I am also told that Spaz loves to talk to the birds outside his windows.

Meet Pepper

Meet Pepper {UPDATE: Pepper found a home yesterday morning! 3/13/06}

The first things I noticed about little Pepper were her delicate mew and the splash of white on her chest. She only gave me about 5 seconds of smiles at a time because there was just so much to see and sniff! She is absolutely joyful and sweet. She had immediately discovered the most concealed and private corner of the studio, and wedged herself between the carpet and the underside of a "coca-cola" wagon. She didn't seem scared or skiddish, I just got the impression that she liked to be cuddled in tight spaces. When I started talking to her, and removed the little toy wagon, she looked up at me as if to say, "well now how will we play hide-n-seek"

Once in the spotlight, Daisy Mae loosened up... Curling into the nest of silk and fleece. Her constant curious glances towards the windows and doors lessened, and her eyelids drooped. Soon she was fast asleep, purring away.

Poor little Daisy was displaced from her Port Orchard home because newborn baby took her place. She is also a bit uncertain of loud noises (especially the vacuum) and she's not too keen on baths. He is a Husky/Malamute mix, and as you can see has striking eyes, one blue and one brown. At his previous home he was an outdoor dog who needed a securely fenced yard. He can sit on command and loved being a part of the family. It is recommended that his new home not have cats or children under 6, and that his new family take him to professional training to learn all the things a good boy knows. Clover's last owner did not have time to take care of him anymore, but it seems that some good exercise, proper socialization and TLC will do him well ~ Clover is a good dog who just needs someone to take good care of him, so that he can return the favor.

KHS has gone to the... horses?

Meet Sugar... and son.

These photos were taken in especially nasty weather for a special mission to supply images for the Humane Society to submit to PetSmart Charities. Application are available at KHS and opening bids range between $200-$500. If you are in need of an Equine friend, please invite one of these beautiful kids into your home. Also, for more about this story, and all the many generous volunteers and donations, please see the front page article in the Central Kitsap Reporter, copied below:

"Homeless: 8 unloved Arabians"

By Kassie Korich
Feb 03 2006

His teeth haven’t quite developed yet, but he gives it his best shot as he tries nibbling on a carrot.
At only 10 days old on Tuesday, Baby is the first horse to be born at the Kitsap Humane Society on Dickey Road in Silverdale since it opened in 1989. Although the humane society has welcomed other livestock into the world, Baby is the first foal.
“We were all excited,” said Dana Lerma, development manager for the shelter, as she held a carrot out for Baby. “It’s very exciting ... When we let him out, he just bucks and is like, ‘I’m king of the pasture.’ He’s sturdy now and pretty fast.”
Baby’s life could have started out much differently, however, if it weren’t for the Kitsap Humane Society and Animal Control who removed his mother and seven other malnourished Arabian horses from their Port Orchard home. He was born to Sugar, a 7-year-old white Arabian mare, who, like the other horses, was in need of tender, loving care once she was brought to the shelter on Jan. 4.
“Sometimes animals are in situations that are not the best for them,” Lerma said. “It wasn’t the best environment for them and they needed something better.”
All seven horses were underweight when they were brought to the shelter. They were provided with no cover at their former home and a few had some medical problems which have now been taken care of. Spice, a 5-year-old sorrel Arabian mare, needed quick medical attention. Her face had grown into her harness and it was cutting into her skin.
“It happens when you put a harness on a young horse and you don’t change the size as it grows,” Lerma said. “It’s like putting a ring on the finger of an infant and never taking it off.”
Lerma says she also has seen that problem not only with livestock, but also with dogs and cats. Since Spice arrived at the humane society, she is on the road to recovery.
“With proper care and medicine, her hair is starting to grow back,” Lerma said.
Now that the horses have been nourished back to health, the humane society is looking to send seven of the eight to loving homes. One of the horses is 32 years old and will be going to live at the North Kitsap-based Horse Harbor Foundation. The remainder will be adopted to the highest bidder who will be subject to inspection and approval by Animal Control. The bid for Sugar and Baby, who must be adopted together, starts at $500. The bidding starts at $300 for Spice; Mystic Star, a 2-year-old roan Arabian gelding; Charlie, a 6-year-old bay Arabian gelding; and Pumpkin, an 8-year-old bay Arabian mare. The bid for Morning Star, a 10-year-old sorrel Arabian gelding begins at $200. Although it is subject to change, bids will be accepted until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 8. For more information call Kitsap Humane Society Operations Manager Judy Tarabochia at (360) 692-6977 ext. 132.
Although the humane society has adequate facilities for livestock, staff are never sure when they’re going to get a large group in. As the unrelenting rains began to fall last month, Lerma knew additional shelter for the horses would be needed. A new loafing shed, constructed by the Kiwi Fencing Company which offered its services at a discount, was made possible by a $3,500 emergency grant from PetSmart Charities and the help of several volunteers.
“When we become overwhelmed I go to the community for help,” Lerma said. “Fortunately, we have a fabulous community.”
Money from that grant was used to build the 12-foot by 24-foot shed. And by chance, a new fence was constructed prior to the horses’ arrival. The fencing, which had been there since 1989, was reconstructed by a local group of volunteers. The area can now be used as a play area for dogs when there are no livestock in.
“They worked for an entire week,” Lerma said. “They completed it a day before we got all these horses. It was just a miracle.”
Volunteers from the Horse Harbor Foundation also have been helping out with the horses.
“They are out here rain or shine,” she said.
As for all of the volunteers and community members who have donated their services and time, Lerma says she isn’t sure what she would have done without them.
“Our staff is always stretched to the limit,” she said.
She adds that if there is one thing the humane society is always in need of, it’s volunteers.
“Volunteers are worth their weight in gold,” she said.

Meet Woody

Meet Woody. {UPDATE: Woody was held back from adoption because of a slight cold. However, when I lifted Woody to his velvet perch beneath the warmth of the studio lighting, his guard dropped and he soon began purring and snoozing.

Woody is a stray from Bremerton, and we don't know much about him. He is neutered and most likely about 4 yrs old. While at the dane & dane studio he was very affectionate and tolerant. He seemed to very much enjoy a good brushing, and loves to be snuggled. He wasn't a "love biter" or aggressive in any manor. He did sneeze a bit and my guess is that he has some minor allergies that have caused him to irritate the skin on his neck and head. But I am pleased to report that from getting in and out of his carrier, to his actual portrait session, Woody was a perfect gentlemen! I am envious of the lucky person who gets to invite him and his gorgeous eyes into their life!

Meet Louie

Meet Louie. {UPDATE: 1/27/06: Today Louie went home with his new family. The plan is that I will photograph one pet a week at the Dane & Dane studio (while also spoiling them as much as possible with comfy pillows, treats and tasty bones), and then hand over the portraits to KHS to display in their lobby and on the kennel of the lucky dog (or cat). I also post the photos in two blogs here on www.dane-dane.com and our goal is to publish the photo in a few local papers as well. Our theory is that some quality portraits of these pets, that really capture their personality, may help them find their forever home. Their new owner will also receive a print of their new companion's portrait. Stay tuned here, and on "the dane's dish" for the weekly photos of our furry guests.

At this point Kitsap Humane Society is looking for a volunteer to escort the animals from their kennel to their photo debut...
